Join This Chariot

It is so fascinating how God works, and how He expresses His love to save all mankind. He is the Master Planner, and He always ensures that no one who truly seeks Him will ever be lost. He keeps us in perfect peace not because we are perfect, but because we trust in Him, and He remains faithful to His own word.

At a time when the Good News was beginning to spread across the earth, Jesus Himself gave this great command and promise:

“Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Matthew 28:20 (KJV)

In those days, there was a man moved by deep devotion and a burning pursuit for God. He set out on a journey to fulfill what his heart longed for something that by human law, tradition, and custom he was not fully eligible to do. But he put all those restrictions aside. He knew the religious system of his day might not welcome him fully, yet he traveled an immense distance—roughly 1,000 to 1,200 miles—just to worship at the Temple in Jerusalem.

To the natural mind and human logic, this looks like foolishness. Why travel so far? Why go where you are not fully accepted? But as Apostle Paul wrote:

“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” 1 Corinthians 1:18 (KJV)

This man is known to us as the Ethiopian eunuch. Church tradition also identifies him as Djan Darada or Simeon Bakos. He was a man of great authority and high position—treasurer to Candace, Queen of the Ethiopians. We understand that "Candace" was not just one name, but the royal title for the powerful Queen Mothers who ruled the ancient Kingdom of Meroë, a wealthy and advanced civilization located in what we know today as Sudan.

The encounter between Philip the Evangelist and this official, recorded in Acts 8:26–40, is one of the most significant moments in the whole Bible. It marks the exact turning point where the Gospel broke out of Jewish territory and began to flow into the wider African world, fulfilling Jesus’ promise that we would be witnesses "unto the uttermost part of the earth" (Acts 1:8).

Grace Overcomes Every Barrier

Jewish law in Deuteronomy 23:1 strictly stated that a eunuch could not enter the full assembly of the Lord. By religious standards, he was excluded. But God had already spoken through the prophet Isaiah long before this moment, preparing a place for him:

“Let not the eunuch say, ‘Behold, I am a dry tree.’ For thus says the Lord: ‘To the eunuchs who keep My Sabbaths, and choose the things that please Me, and hold fast My covenant, I will give in My house and within My walls a place and a name better than that of sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that shall not be cut off.’”

Isaiah 56:3–5

This teaches us a powerful truth: Man sets barriers, but God breaks them down. He came seeking, and God was already waiting for him. Your status, your background, your past, or what people say about you cannot stop God from meeting you when you hunger for Him. God looks at the heart, not the label.

The Scriptures Are About Jesus

As he rode in his chariot, he was reading aloud from the scroll of Isaiah, chapter 53—the prophecy of the Suffering Servant—but he did not understand what it meant. When Philip ran beside the chariot and asked: “Do you understand what you are reading?”, the man answered honestly: “How can I, unless someone guides me?” Acts 8:30–31.

Here is the key: The Bible is not just history or rules—it is a book about Jesus. Philip started from that very scripture and preached to him Jesus Christ. He explained how the Servant was wounded for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities, and how by His stripes we are healed.

“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” John 1:3.

Every page points to Him. You cannot truly understand the Bible until you see Christ in it.

Divine Timing and The Leading of the Spirit

Nothing here happened by accident. The angel of the Lord spoke specifically to Philip: “Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.” Acts 8:26.

Philip did not ask questions; he simply obeyed. This shows us that evangelism and ministry are directed by the Holy Spirit, not just our own plans. God prepares the heart of the seeker, and God prepares the messenger. When the Spirit said “Go near, and join yourself to this chariot,” Philip moved immediately.

God is always arranging appointments for you. Sometimes He tells you to go somewhere that seems strange or far, but it is because there is someone waiting to hear the Good News through you.

Nothing Hinders You

When the man understood the Gospel, he looked up and saw water nearby. He asked a question that changes everything: “See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?” Acts 8:36.

Under the Old Covenant, many things hindered him. But in the New Covenant through Christ, the answer is: NOTHING.

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:28.

He was fully accepted, fully washed, and fully adopted into God’s family. He went from being an outsider to being a beloved child of God. This is the power of the Gospel—it levels every ground at the foot of the cross.

A Seed That Grows Into A Nation

This man returned home as the first recorded African convert. Church tradition tells us that he carried this faith back to his people, and from that faithful beginning grew the foundation for the Christian faith across Africa, including the great Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church.

One man’s encounter with God changed the spiritual destiny of a whole region. This teaches us: Your personal encounter with Jesus is not just for you—it is meant to affect your family, your city, and your nation.

Reflection & Lessons For Us Today

Seek with everything you have:

This man traveled over 1,000 miles just to find God. How much are we willing to give? He teaches us that the one who seeks, finds.

“But from there you will seek the Lord your God, and you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.” Deuteronomy 4:29.

Honesty is the key to understanding:

He said “I do not understand.” Many people pretend to know it all, but the humble heart is the one God teaches. If you do not understand, ask God, ask His word, ask those He has sent to help you.

Join the Chariot:

God is still moving today. He is inviting you to join His chariot—to be part of what He is doing in these last days. Just as Philip ran to meet him, we must be ready to run and meet people where they are.

Your story matters:

Just as this man’s story opened the door for Africa, your life and your testimony will open doors for many others.

Conclusion

God is not looking for perfect people; He is looking for people who will seek Him. Whether you are rich or poor, known or unknown, near or far—if your heart is turned toward Him, He will come running to meet you.
