Unbelief

"Can two walk together, except they be agreed?" — Amos 3:3

Introduction

I have been meditating on this for quite a while, and it is high time we put this truth into study. We do not often talk about something called unbelief, yet it is one of the most powerful forces working against God’s people today.

The problem with unbelief is that it does not affect only one person — it is a system designed against a generation. Sin is easy to spot; it leaves a visible stain on a person’s life. But unbelief hides deep inside. It looks like wisdom. It looks like carefulness. It looks like "being realistic." It needs careful examination to fish it out.

How can it be that a chosen person — someone God called, someone delivered, someone in covenant with Him — can carry unbelief in their heart? This must be understood deeply, so that the next generation does not fall into this same pit.

What Is Unbelief?

In Scripture, unbelief is more than lack of information or innocent doubt. It is an active or passive refusal to trust, believe, and obey God and His revealed Word. It treats God’s promises with contempt and pulls a person away from fellowship with Him.

To truly grasp unbelief, we must understand covenant — because unbelief cannot exist outside a covenant relationship. Here is the vital distinction:

- Outside covenant → Sin: A person who does not know God rejects His ways — this is sin.

- Inside covenant → Unbelief: A person who knows God, who has been saved, who has His promise — yet says, "I know You said it, but I do not fully believe it will happen for me." This is unbelief.

Covenant is the seal that binds two into one — but covenant is not the end. It was established for an agenda: the will of God. We are saved from sin, then God establishes covenant with us, then His will should be done. Unbelief stops that third step. God speaks, and instead of saying "Yes and amen," we look at His Word — not to agree, but to disagree.

"He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that, what He had promised, He was able also to perform." — Romans 4:20–21

Abraham is our example: faith says "He is able." Unbelief says "Yes, but…"

When God Speaks and We Disagree

"Wherein hast Thou Loved Us?" — Malachi 1:2

God spoke to His people, saying, "I have loved you." It was not a question — it was a fact, a continuous, present-tense love. But the people replied, "Wherein hast Thou loved us?" They did not reject God; they simply questioned His love based on their circumstances.

This is the voice of unbelief: God declares His goodness, and we look at our difficulties to disagree with His declaration. Unbelief always uses circumstances to judge God’s promise, instead of using God’s promise to judge our circumstances.

The Twelve Spies — Disagreement That Delayed Destiny

God told Israel, "I give unto you the land of Canaan." It was a gift, a promise — done from God’s side. Moses sent twelve leaders to see what God had given. Ten came back with an evil report: "We cannot go up; they are stronger than we… we were in our own sight as grasshoppers."

They saw the same land, the same fruit — but they disagreed with God’s assessment. God said "I give," and they said "We cannot take." The result? Forty years of delay. An entire generation fell in the wilderness — not because they were wicked sinners, but because they could not bring themselves to agree with God.

Only Joshua and Caleb said, "If the Lord delight in us, then He will bring us into this land… fear them not, for the Lord is with us."

God asked this piercing question:

"How long will this people provoke Me? and how long will it be ere they believe Me?" (Numbers 14:11).

He did not ask how long they would sin — He asked how long they would refuse to believe Him. Unbelief is the ultimate provocation.

"Lord, I Believe; Help Thou Mine Unbelief" — Mark 9:23–24

A desperate father brought his tormented son to Jesus. Jesus said, "If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth." The father cried out honestly: "Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief."

This is the most honest prayer a believer can pray. He was not an outsider — he came to Jesus, he wanted to believe, yet something in him still struggled. Jesus did not rebuke him. He met him where he was. Jesus does not cast us away when we struggle to believe — He helps our unbelief when we honestly admit it.

The Ripple Effect: Unbelief Spreads to Every System

Here is the critical truth for our day: Unbelief is not just a private spiritual problem. If it lives in your relationship with God, it will inevitably spread into every relationship and system you touch.

Every human system is built on covenant — two or more people coming into agreement. When your heart is trained to disagree with God, you will carry that same spirit into every area of life:

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family

If you do not trust God’s love and faithfulness, you will not fully trust your spouse or family. You hold back your whole heart, keeping one eye open for betrayal. Unbelief in God creates fear in love.

📚 Education

If you do not believe God is the source of all truth, you treat knowledge as something to boast in or use for self-gain. You separate "secular facts" from "spiritual truth," forgetting that "in Him are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3).

🏛️ Politics & Government

If you do not trust God’s ordering of authority, you resist, rebel against, and distrust every human leader. No one will ever be "good enough" for you to submit to — because your heart has learned to disagree with the One who appoints all authority.

🎬 Entertainment & The Arts

If you do not trust God as the Creator, entertainment becomes empty — just distraction or corruption. You lose the ability to discern what is true, noble, and beautiful because you no longer agree with God’s standard of excellence.

📰 Media & Communication

If you do not believe God is the God of truth, every message becomes something to suspect, twist, or reject. You stop asking "Is this true?" and start asking "What do they gain by this?" Universal doubt replaces shared trust.

⛪ Religion

If you do not truly agree with God, you come to church but do not trust one another. You serve but not in unity. You speak but do not believe. Religion becomes performance without partnership — because the foundation of agreement is broken.

💼 Business & Economy

If you do not trust God as your Provider, you lie, cut corners, cheat, or fearfully hoard. You cannot trust that God will bless honest work — so you take matters into your own hands. Every business relationship becomes a transaction of suspicion rather than covenant partnership.

The Core Principle

Unbelief is a heart habit. If you practice checking God’s Word to disagree, you will practice the exact same thing in every other relationship. You cannot disagree with God in secret and expect to agree with people in public. The heart does not change its nature — it only changes who it is doubting.

When God says "I will provide" and you disagree → you distrust your employer, your partners, your family.

When God says "I am with you" and you disagree → you feel alone even when people are there for you.

When God says "This person is for you" and you disagree → you reject, push away, or sabotage the very relationships God sent to bless you.

How to Overcome Unbelief

The problem of the chosen is not that they cannot identify God’s Word — it is that they do not know how to check it and agree with it. We are called to test everything against Scripture — not to find reasons to disagree, but to align our thinking with God’s.

- Acknowledge it honestly: Like the father — "Lord, I believe; help my unbelief." Do not pretend.

- Feed on His faithfulness: Remind yourself daily of what He has already done. Remember His past faithfulness.

- Agree out loud: Speak His Word back to Him. "Lord, You said it — I agree." Faith comes by hearing His Word.

- Test everything: "Test all things; hold fast what is good" (1 Thessalonians 5:21). The Bereans "searched the Scriptures daily" — not to doubt, but to confirm and align.

Why This Matters Right Now

We are living in a time when society is collapsing from the inside out — not because there are too many sinners, but because there is too much unbelief in covenant. Every system is breaking because people have lost the ability to trust — and that inability to trust starts in the secret place, between a person and God.

This study is urgent because:

- Personal restoration: You cannot fix your relationships or your impact on society until you fix your agreement with God.

- Generational deliverance: We must break this cycle now so the next generation does not inherit a world where no one trusts anyone — not even God.

- Systemic transformation: When a generation learns to agree with God again, that spirit of agreement flows into family, education, government, business, media, arts, and religion — and entire systems are refreshed.

Closing

Unbelief is not a small thing — it is a covenant issue. It is a generation issue. It delayed Israel for forty years. It hides in hearts that know God. But the good news is this: Jesus is able to help our unbelief. He does not cast us away when we struggle to believe — He meets us where we are and says, "Believe, and I will help the rest."

Let us not be like the generation that checked God’s Word to disagree. Let us be like Joshua and Caleb — who said, "The Lord is with us — fear not." Let us search His Word, find His truth, align with it, and say, "Yes, Lord — let it be so."

"Today if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts… So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief." — Hebrews 3:15, 19

 🙏 PRAYER

Lord, I come before You honestly. I admit there are times I struggle to believe. I look at my circumstances and I question Your Word. I look at the giants and I feel small. I look at the future and I am afraid. But today — I choose to agree with You. Where You have spoken — I say "Yes." Where You have promised — I say "Amen." Help my unbelief. Take away the spirit of disagreement. Teach me to walk in agreement with You so that I can walk in agreement with others. Let my life, my family, my work, and everything I touch carry the spirit of faith — not unbelief. In Jesus' name, Amen.
